Seeing Questions

Different eyes, different experiences

If an illusion looks different to you than to a friend, you are in good company. Here are the questions readers ask us most.

Questions and answers

Why do people see the same illusion differently?

Perception combines the image with assumptions about light, distance and shape. Experience, screen settings, viewing distance and where your eyes land first all influence the result.

Does the first thing I see reveal my personality or intelligence?

There is no reliable evidence for this. Viral claims are entertainment. First impressions mostly reflect gaze position, contrast, expectations and chance.

Why can't I see both versions of an ambiguous image at once?

For bistable figures the brain usually commits to one interpretation at a time and alternates between them. Read more on Double Images.

I don't see the illusion. Is something wrong with my eyes?

Not necessarily. Illusion strength varies between people and viewings. If you have concerns about your vision, an eye care professional is the right person to ask. This site cannot test or diagnose vision.

Are optical illusions safe to look at?

Our images are static and contain no flashing. Some high-contrast patterns elsewhere online can be uncomfortable or, for people with photosensitive conditions, risky. Look away if anything feels unpleasant.

Can impossible objects be built in real life?

They can be built to look impossible from one viewpoint by separating or bending parts. From other angles the trick becomes visible. See Impossible Forms.

Why do illusions still work after I know the explanation?

Many illusions arise in early, automatic visual processing. Knowing the answer changes what you believe, but not always what you see.

Do colour vision differences affect illusions?

Yes, especially colour-based illusions. Shape and perspective illusions usually work similarly, which is why we design with strong value contrast.
